Why the Dallas Stars Can Win the Stanley Cup This Season

The Dallas Stars are one of the leading candidates to destroy the Los Angeles Kings-Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup monopoly this season – and rightly so. The Stars have formed one of the most dangerous attacking units in the National Hockey League and could well go on to win the prestigious trophy at the end of the postseason, and here’s why.

Ultimately, Dallas have an incredibly strong roster. The likes of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, who are both sitting pretty in the NHL’s leading group for both goals and points this season, have been phenomenal and will play key roles as the Stars continue their assault on the rest of the NHL.

If nothing else, the Stars should take plenty of confidence from the Western Conference’s efforts in the Stanley Cup in recent years. The Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings, both of the Western Conference, have won the competition in five of the last six years and Dallas could be the next Western side to emerge victorious at the end of the postseason.

At the time of writing, Dallas are priced at 8/1 to win the Stanley Cup with Betway and plenty of punters will be tempted by the Stars – especially if they consider their recent form since the Christmas break. As the business end of the season approaches, Dallas are in fine form and with the free-scoring Benn and Seguin in attack, their lines are lethal.

If Dallas are to continue climbing up the NHL power rankings, their coaching staff must refuse the temptation to make changes. As of March 24th, Dallas have lost just two of their last ten matches – so something is obviously working and they’d be foolish to make drastic changes to a winning formula. For now, they should remain focused on the postseason.

One problem for Dallas may be their defensive frailties. At the time of writing, they’ve conceded 213 goals in 74 games this season and they MUST improve if they’re going to win the Stanley Cup. In some sports, outscoring the opposition can win you titles but in ice hockey, defence wins you championships.

For now, Dallas will continue to overpower teams with their attacking style of play but it won’t be long before Lindy Ruff decides to make a few coaching changes in the build-up to the playoffs.

As of now, the Stars have a great chance in this year’s postseason but the Stanley Cup may be a little beyond them unless they tighten up defensively. However, with Benn and Seguin in fine form, it would be extremely foolish to rule them out completely.
